After a short drive and several stops to pick up the tennis shoes of those people (including us) who didn’t think of them in the first place, we arrive at a dusty parking slot. There are 2 sheds holding a small shop and 2 rooms full of equipment.
With 10 people from school we enter the room and they tell us some basics: Take off the security cap and latch only in the field, wear your mask at any time in the field, don’t shoot at someone closer than 5 meters, don’t shoot at someone holding his hands up etc.
Next thing: Do we want to wear long pants and sleeves, as it might not hurt that much, if you are hit?
After a short look at the evil smiling guys in our group all girls nod vigorously...
So they strap us into army clothes, an inside and outside vest and a mask, that rather prevents breathing…
With our gun we then go out to the field - and already regret wearing all this equipment. 35°C outside temperature and the sun is not hiding behind clouds for once but shines with all his might.
Puh. That's gonna be authentic conditions ;-)
We divide into 2 groups. The instructor smiles broadly putting Markus to the other group and says: Now you can shoot at her without punishment! Enjoy! - We feel like in a video game.
We play 3 scenarios.
The first is just: Survive.
I am shot after 10 seconds (ouch! so much for the long sleeves!), Markus after 9 (and no, it wasn’t me :-D).
The second: Get the flag and bring it back to your base.
We have a strategy this time and our group does pretty good, but cannot get close to the flag. You cannot aim very good with those guns, the only goal is, to keep firing and to look where the bullets are flying to. I finally manage to hit someone while I try to keep my head down. Our group still wins that scenario as we can eliminate all people of the other group.
The third: Get the flag and bring it to the enemies base.
Our strategy this time: 2 people stay hidden and try to hit anything that moves and is green (i.e. the other group).
The other 3 try to sneak to the flag. We get the flag but cannot make it out of a shed.
My gun is hit (which also counts) and I go back, the gun high up in the air as a sign of surrender.
At the fence two guys from a group of the columbian armada, that plays football at the neighbor field, try to give advice. When I walk by they can’t help but laugh, but smile in sympathy then. I guess we wouldn’t survive long enough to even take a deep breath playing against the pro’s ;-D
After around 2 hours all of us are soaked.
Taking off the mask and army clothes with a collective sigh we then discover our bruises, that just start to get black and blue.
But still, it was actually a lot of fun. :-P
